Touch, Colour and First Encounters with Painting

Kids Finger Painting Workshop | Romulus Folio Gallery

As part of Romulus Folio Gallery’s holiday program, our Kids Finger Painting Workshop invited young participants into the gallery for an afternoon of colour, movement and tactile exploration. Children aged 2.5-7 worked with paint through direct touch, using their hands to explore texture, gesture and mark making in an open, supportive environment.

Working with primary colours alongside green, the workshop introduced foundational ideas of colour, mixing and visual language through play. Rather than focusing on outcomes, the session centred on process. The children were encouraged to respond intuitively to the materials, discovering how colour shifts, overlaps and evolves through movement and experimentation.

Finger painting offers a powerful entry point into contemporary art practice. By removing tools and allowing direct contact with the medium, young participants experience painting as a physical and sensory act. This approach supports confidence, agency and creative decision making, while gently introducing the idea that art can be exploratory, personal and process-led.

At Romulus Folio Gallery, we see early creative experiences as essential to building long-term relationships with art and cultural spaces. Hosting children in a professional gallery setting allows them to encounter contemporary art as something they are already part of and increasingly familiar with.

Our kids workshops sit alongside exhibitions, artist-led programs and public events, forming part of an ongoing commitment to accessibility, audience development and community engagement. Moments of play, curiosity and shared making are foundational to this work and continue to shape the way we think about the gallery as a living cultural space.
