Arabella Strachan: Light Within Structure

Romulus Folio Gallery

At the opening of Prototypes on the 13th of February 2026, artist Arabella Strachan briefly spoke about her illuminated textile works and the material processes that shape them.

Strachan’s practice centres on the relationship between fibre, structure and internal radiance. Through hand weaving, tufting and carefully constructed frameworks, she creates textile forms that extend into space while maintaining architectural clarity. Illumination is integrated within the woven structure, allowing light to move through the surface and shape the surrounding environment.

Her illuminated vessels hold a quiet and assured presence. The woven framework directs luminosity through material density and texture, activating the wall as both structural support and radiant field.

Drawing on textile traditions, Strachan advances these techniques into spatial form. Fibre becomes a structural language, carrying rhythm, repetition and light within a unified material body.

Prototypes

6 February to 1 March 2026

Presented at Romulus Folio Gallery in South Melbourne, Prototypes brings together artists engaged in material experimentation and spatial testing within contemporary practice. The exhibition explores how works generate presence through structure, process and environmental activation.

Arabella Strachan’s illuminated textile works contribute a luminous dimension within the exhibition, expanding the dialogue between surface, framework and internal radiance.
