Lucia Medina: Sculpting Memory and Form in Prototypes
Romulus Folio is delighted to announce that Lucia Medina, an Argentine‑Australian artist based in Melbourne, will feature in the forthcoming Prototypes group exhibition February 6 -1 March 2026. Her sculptural practice explores the boundaries between memory, gesture, and materiality, reflecting deeply on process, form, and the sensory presence of art.
About Lucia Medina’s Practice
Lucia Medina
Lucia’s background in Industrial Design and Psychology informs a practice that bridges structural precision and emotive expression. Working in plaster, ceramics, and mixed media, she creates forms defined by folds, curves, and tensioned surfaces. These works evoke the traces of lived experience and the passage of time, inviting viewers to engage with both the material and the process that shaped it.
Her sculptures focus on texture, gesture, and spatial presence, creating layered works that embody both reflection and transformation. Through these forms, material becomes language, and the act of making itself becomes central to the viewer’s experience.
Conceptual Relevance to Prototypes
The Prototypes exhibition is about emergence, iteration, and exploration, showing how artistic ideas begin, evolve, and take shape. Lucia’s work aligns strongly with these concepts:
Emergence & iteration: Her pieces suggest transformation rather than fixed conclusions, highlighting the fluidity of creative process.
Material as memory: Her surfaces carry traces of making, reflecting histories and emotional resonance embedded in form.
Gesture as imprint: Each fold and curve evidences the artist’s interaction with her medium, making the process visible.
Interdisciplinary practice: Straddling design, craft, and fine art, her work embodies boundary blurring and exploration.
Through Lucia’s sculptural mounted works, the notion of a “prototype” becomes both literal and metaphorical: a form in progress, a layered reflection of memory, identity, and the act of creation.
Looking Ahead
We are excited to showcase Lucia Medina’s work in Prototypes, alongside a curated selection of artists including Arabella Strachan and Kasia Dudkiewicz, exploring material, process, and transformation. Prototypes invites viewers to witness art in its evolving state, where form, process, and meaning continually intersect.
