Finding Quiet Edges: The Work of Arabella Strachan

In Arabella Strachan’s textile and mixed-media works, stillness is structure. Using tufted yarn, timber, and found surfaces, she builds quiet topographies that invite the viewer to trace the rhythms of breath, pattern, and place.

Her process begins with repetition, loops of thread, measured gestures, subtle shifts in colour, until the surface becomes something more than textile: a field of emotion rendered through touch. Each piece balances the intimacy of craft with the rigour of design, revealing how restraint can hold its own intensity.

At Romulus Folio, we are drawn to practices that move between feeling and form, where process becomes a language for perception. Strachan’s work reminds us that material itself can hold memory, and that abstraction, when approached with sincerity, can be a kind of listening.

Arabella continues to share her process through tufting workshops held at Romulus Folio Gallery. These sessions offer an insight into her approach to making, where repetition becomes rhythm, and rhythm becomes reflection.
