Seeing Through Touch: Andrea Vargas and the Language of Ceramic CHARMs
Some forms of art begin not with sight, but with the hand. Melbourne based artist, Andrea Vargas, invites us to join her ceramic charms workshop, to explore touch as a way of seeing, a means of translating memory, intimacy, and material into form. Her practice moves between jewellery, ceramics, and mixed media, guided by curiosity for how objects can hold personal stories. Each piece carries traces of both maker and moment, a gentle conversation between artist, material, and observer.
In this workshop, observation takes the shape of adornment: the weight of a charm, the curve of a handpainted pendant interacting with the mark of a fingertip pressed into clay. These are quiet gestures that ask us to slow down enough to notice and consider how art can live close to the body, as memory, protection, or small ritual.
Create Your Own Ceramic Jewellery Charm
Workshop Sunday 23 November, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
In her upcoming workshop, Create Your Own Ceramic Jewellery Charm, Andrea invites participants to step into this world of tactile seeing. Across two hours, you’ll shape and form your own ceramic charms, exploring how small objects can speak of identity and belonging. The session welcomes all levels and offers a space for play, reflection, and creative connection. Each participant will leave with a unique, hand-crafted charm — a fragment of story to carry or gift.
Observer 7 to 30 November 2025
Romulus Folio Gallery, The Gladstone, South Melbourne.
This November, Andrea joins Romulus Folio’s group exhibition Observer, alongside six other artists exploring the act of looking and being looked at.
Through November, Observer features artists who work with sensitivity and intent, each exploring perception as both an inner and outer act. Andrea Vargas’s contribution adds a tangible, sensory voice to this conversation, reminding us that looking can also be felt, and that art made by hand and ceramic material carries its own quiet language of care.
