Romulus Salon Concept: Necessity of Being in Relationship
Reflections on the First Romulus Salon in a Monthly Series
On Thursday evening, February 26, Romulus Folio Gallery hosted the first Romulus Salon at The Gladstone in South Melbourne. It was a thoughtful and generous beginning.
Creative practitioners including artists across disciplines, architects and designers gathered within the gallery space for connection, community and conversation around practice and experience. The atmosphere was warm, attentive and open. Introductions became stories. Stories became shared reference points. What unfolded was a collective awareness of what is needed more of within our local creative landscape.
A Study in Relationship
Romulus Salon was born from the belief that the creative act requires a dedicated ecosystem. We are exploring the necessity of being in relationship as an active and rigorous framework for practice. This inquiry focuses on five key dimensions:
Relationship to Each Other: Breaking the isolation of the studio or workshpace to find a kinship that is both professional and personal. While the creative act is often solitary, the practitioner need not be.
Relationship to Our Practice: Cultivating a space where process, rigour, inspiration, and the day-to-day realities of making are valued alongside the final outcome. We celebrate the "how" and the "why" as much as the "what."
Relationship to the Work: Investigating how our work lives and breathes once it leaves our hands.
To Feedback: Developing a culture of constructive exchange as works in progress evolve. The Salon becomes a site of development where ideas are tested and articulated together.
To the Responder: Honouring those who witness the work. We seek to deepen the dialogue between the maker and the audience, recognising that the "response" is what completes the creative cycle.
The Evening’s Resonance
The Salon began with a facilitated welcome and structured introductions so that everyone understood the nature of each other’s practice. This simple act of naming what we do and why we do it created immediate depth. Emerging practitioners and established voices shared the same circle, later forming smaller conversational clusters that continued well beyond the formal opening.
This first gathering affirmed the deep need for a consistent and welcoming container where meaningful dialogue and connections can develop over time. Romulus Salon is an artist-led forum embedded within the gallery’s presence in Fishermans Bend. We are committed to conversation as practice and community as architecture.
