FUSION: Contemporary Art x Design in Spatial Dialogue
Featuring Mark Alexander and curated by angelina Mirabito
Romulus Folio Gallery presents FUSION, an exhibition examining the convergence of contemporary art and spatial design through the immersive interior practice of luxury interior designer, bespoke furniture maker and sculptor Mark Alexander.
Alexander’s work operates through total spatial composition. Architecture, bespoke furniture, sculptural form, material finishes and light are conceived as an integrated environment structured by proportion, geometry and luminosity. Across more than three decades of high-end residential interiors, his practice demonstrates sustained material intelligence and architectonic clarity.
Within the gallery, FUSION presents sculptural furniture alongside contemporary painting, architectural documentation and material development studies drawn from Alexander’s Brisbane Art Deco residence. At the centre of the installation are a bespoke Art Deco and Mid-Century inspired oval dining table and a handcrafted solid oak sideboard. These works embody Alexander’s approach to proportion, structure and material precision while foregrounding the sculptural potential of functional design.
Documentation from Flights of Love, a collaborative project between Mark Alexander and Angelina Mirabito, is also presented within the exhibition. The painting series, created by Mirabito through close conceptual collaboration with Alexander, responds to the curvature and structural rhythm of the residence’s central staircase. Concept-development studies and process documentation reveal the translation of architectural movement, tonal material language and spatial rhythm into painterly surface.
The exhibition is curated by Angelina Mirabito, whose paintings are installed throughout the space in dialogue with Alexander’s furniture and architectural references. Large-scale works extend the spatial rhythm of the interior project into the gallery environment, while a central “impact wall” installation introduces an architectural plane that anchors the exhibition’s visual axis.
Sculptural spheres placed throughout the gallery echo the brass spheres integrated within Alexander’s furniture designs. These forms extend the material language of the furniture into the surrounding environment, reinforcing the exhibition’s spatial continuity and creating a dialogue between surface, object and architectural volume.
Across the installation, paintings, sculptural elements and furniture operate as a cohesive field. Surface, geometry and light move across the wall, object and architectural structure, translating Alexander’s immersive interior methodology into an exhibition environment.
Through this spatial dialogue, FUSION demonstrates how contemporary art and design converge through shared structural language, material intelligence and spatial composition. The exhibition continues Romulus Folio Gallery’s curatorial focus on architectonic practice, cross-disciplinary collaboration and the relationship between the built environment and contemporary abstraction.
