Welcoming Gerard Russo to Romulus Folio
A quiet intensity meets patient observation.
Romulus Folio is delighted to welcome Melbourne artist Gerard Russo to our growing community of exhibiting artists. Gerard’s work moves with precision and tenderness, drawings that emerge from the discipline of observation and the honesty of process. His line holds silence; his surfaces breathe. In each work, gesture and restraint meet to create a visual language that is at once architectural and deeply human.
Trained in fine art and working primarily with graphite, charcoal, copper, charcoal, and illumination, Gerard approaches drawing as an act of witness, a way of attending to the world through stillness and care. The marks he makes are not hurried; they arrive slowly, like breath on glass, revealing what remains when everything unnecessary has been stripped away. His practice reflects a belief that to draw is to notice, to meet the world with patience and empathy.
A Practice of Presence
In an era dominated by speed and digital immediacy, Gerard’s work restores our attention to the handmade and the observed. His drawings invite viewers into a quiet dialogue, one that values imperfection and touch as evidence of being. Whether working on paper or lightbox, his process reveals how observation itself can become a form of devotion.
At Romulus Folio, Gerard joins a group of seven artists whose practices are rooted in transformation, craftsmanship, and emotional depth. His upcoming participation in the group exhibition Observer and his workshop Drawing as Witness will offer audiences a rare glimpse into the meditative space where seeing becomes making.
Thursday 20 November, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Romulus Folio, The Gladstone, South Melbourne.
In this intimate session, Gerard will guide participants through the process of mindful drawing: slowing down perception, exploring tone and texture, and translating attention into mark. The workshop welcomes all skill levels and invites participants to rediscover the act of seeing through simple, expressive materials.
An Artist Rooted in Observation
Through his practice, Gerard Russo reminds us that the act of drawing is not merely to record, but to encounter. His work captures what often goes unseen, the soft edges of light, the fleeting shadow, the breath of a moment held still.
We’re honoured to represent his work within our artist collective and to share his distinctive voice with the Romulus Folio audience.
Welcome, Gerard, may your lines continue to teach us how to see.
