Writing for Wellbeing: Tides & Transformations
Reflections from our first winter session, held 29 June 2025
At the end of June, Romulus Folio held the first of our Writing for Wellbeing workshops; a gentle, reflective session themed Tides & Transformations. Set within the quiet warmth of the gallery, this 90-minute gathering invited participants to explore the cycles of change in their lives through creative writing.
Facilitated by Dr Angelina Mirabito, artist-in-residence and founder of Romulus Folio, this offering reflects one of our core values: that art, in all its forms, can be a deeply personal tool for self-inquiry and renewal.
Meeting Change with Creativity
The session asked: How do we respond to life’s changes; the tides, the turning points, the things that shift beneath the surface?
Participants were invited to write freely and privately, with no expectation to share. The emphasis was on showing up honestly, not with polished words, but with truth as it felt in the moment. Some pieces were kept, others destroyed at the end of the session. All of it was valid.
Writing prompts guided participants through a journey of reflection:
Noticing the rhythms of their lives
Naming a change they longed for
Considering what small shifts or letting go might be needed
Looking back on past transformations with curiosity and compassion
In one of the most powerful moments of the session, participants imagined their future selves, ten years ahead, grounded in a life they deeply hoped for, and received a letter of encouragement, wisdom, and reassurance from that version of themselves.
A Soft Space to Reflect
This workshop marked the beginning of what we hope will be an ongoing offering at Romulus Folio, a place not only for exhibiting artwork but for engaging in creative process as a practice of self-discovery.
Angelina, whose own life has been shaped and steadied by writing, describes this work as essential:
“I’ve used writing to move through many periods of transition. It helped me leave what needed to be left, and slowly shape a life that feels more mine, even if it’s still in progress. Writing is how I build bridges to now.”
Echoes of the Session
Quotes shared upon the sessions closed, small beacons for those navigating change through their ongoing journaling practice:
“Writing is medicine… It is an appropriate companion for any difficult change.” - Julia Cameron
“No feeling is final.” - Rainer Maria Rilke
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” - Viktor Frankl
In a world that so often demands certainty and speed, this workshop was an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to trust in the quiet power of transformation. Taking it one word and breath at a time.
We are grateful to those who joined us for this first offering. Future Writing for Wellbeing sessions will continue throughout winter, with themes that follow the seasons: inward, honest, and rooted in care.
Until next time, may your tides bring clarity, and your transformations be kind.
